Opening Weekend of Dutch oven Cooking and Camping 2007

The holidays are over for another year and it’s time to starting thinking about the Opening Weekend of Dutch Oven Cooking and Camping.  The last few years the event has been held in the SE part of the State.  This year with the help of Nancy Johnson from the Columbia Basin Dutch Oven Society and Laura Schmidt from the 3 River Cast Iron Cookers we have picked a site in the center of the state.

 Date:  April 20, 21, 22, 2007

Place:  Stars and Stripes RV Park

            5707 Highway 28

            Ephrata, WA 98823

Telephone:  509-787-1062

Toll Free:  1-800-422-8447

E-mail:  stars.stripesrv@yahoo.com

Website:  http://www.starsandstripesrvresort.com

Rates:  When you make reservations identify yourself as Dutch oven cooks.

$23 - RVs
            $17 - tents
$35 - Cabins for 2 people no cooking or smoking in Cabins

Space:  They have set aside 20 spaces for us.  We also have reserved the Banquet Room, a small stand alone cabin surrounded by grass.  There are also some small cabins for folks who don’t want to camp or to pull their trailer.

Schedule:  The Opening Weekend has always been schedule free.  It’s a time for people to gather, camp, cook, and enjoy each others company.

That said we traditionally have a pot luck Friday and Saturday Night.  Saturday night is the night to show off your new or favorite recipe.  Saturday and Sunday mornings are “grazing times”  As people get up they start cooking when ever the mood strikes them.  When they get something ready they give a call and folks drift over with their plate and fork to sample what ever you cooked.  I have seen breakfast last as long as 2 ½ hours.  It’s relaxing, it’s fun, and helps get people to visit each others camp kitchens.

During the day you can relax or go visit lots interesting places that are a short drive away.  We will have traps set up for a central gathering and eating place.  If the weather turns out wind, cold, and or raining we have the building as a back up.

I encourage you to make your reservations as soon as possible.  If you have any questions you can call me at 509-520-6362 or email me at lynnandpaul@charter.net.  See You There!  -  Paul
